Let \(G\) be an arbitrary compact group, \(\sigma\) be a continuous automorphism, and \(\tau\) be a continuous anti-automorphism such that \(\sigma^2=\tau^2=\mathrm{id}\). The authors generalize the small-dimension lemma by \textit{D. Yang} [Can. Math. Bull. 56, No. 1, 218--224 (2013; Zbl 1266.39030)] and then use it to solve the functional equation \(f(x\sigma(y))+f(\tau(y)x)=2f(x)f(y)\) in terms of continuous characters of \(G\) in which \(x,y \in G\) and \(f: G\to \mathbb{C}\) is an unknown function. The case where \(G\) is abelian is explored in [\textit{H. Stetkær}, Functional equations on groups. Hackensack, NJ: World Scientific (2013; Zbl 1298.39018)].
