The authors try for the first time to connect the classical hypercircle method with the virtual element method (VEM) in order to solve a two dimensional diffusion problem. First they introduce the VEM for the primal and mixed formulations of this problem. Then, they show that mixed formulation of the VEM satisfies a discrete inf-sup condition with inf-sup constant independent of the degree of accuracy of the method and construct a stabilization of the mixed VEM with stability bounds that are explicit in terms of such degree of accuracy. A robust and efficient error estimator is also constructed. Two test problems are carried out in order to observe performance of VEM and of the equilibrated error estimator.
