Motivated by \textit{A. Pazy}'s trichotomy theorem [Isr. J. Math. 9, 235--240 (1971; Zbl 0225.54032)] regarding the asymptotic behavior of the iterates of a nonexpansive (that is, \(1\)-Lipschitz) mapping in a Hilbert space \(H\), the authors of the present paper analyze the fixed-point-free case in more detail when \(H\) is finite-dimensional. They also discuss the relationship of their results to the Method of Alternating Projections, the Proximal Point Algorithm and the recent work by \textit{B. Lins} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 137, No. 7, 2387--2392 (2009; Zbl 1171.47041)]. We remark in passing that other developments concerning Pazy's theorem in Hilbert and Banach spaces can be found, for example, in a paper by \textit{A. T. Plant} and the reviewer [J. Funct. Anal. 54, 308--319 (1983; Zbl 0542.47045)], and in the references cited there.
