The two main results are: \par I. The following are equivalent.\par 1. A semigroup \(S\) and a monoid \(M\) are strongly Morita equivalent.\par 2. There exists \(e\in E(S)\) such that \(S = SeS\) and \(eSe\cong M\) as monoids. \par 3. \(S\) is an enlargement of \(M\).\par II: The following are equivalent.\par 1. The semigroup \(S\) and the group \(G\) are strongly Morita equivalent. \par 2. \(S\) is isomorphic to a Rees matrix semigroup over \(G\).\par 3. \(S\) is simple and there exists \(e\in E(S)\) such that \(eSe\cong G\) as groups.\par 4. \(S\) is an enlargement of \(G\).\par Here the concept of enlargement is slightly modified as follows. A semigroup \(T\) is an enlargement of \(S\) if there exists a subsemigroup \(R\subseteq T\) such that \(RTR = R, TRT = T\) and \(R\cong S\) (as semigroups).
