A generalized family of symmetric multistep methods (GFSMMs) are formulated for solving second-order initial value problems for ordinary differential equations. The derivation of the methods are presented in form of flowcharts. The P-stability, phase-lag (PL) properties and algebraic order for the GFSMMs are examined for the harmonic oscillator and the scalar test equation. The authors observe that the GFSMMs exhibit good phase-lag PL properties, such as minimal PL error constant with high-order PL. Numerical examples support the presented methods.
