Tensor network states and matrix product operators are important tools in condensed matter theory. In the recent work of \textit{N. Bultinck} et al. [Ann. Phys. 378, 183--233 (2017; Zbl 1367.81084)], the authors did systematic research on matrix product operators giving tensors to study anyons. In this paper, the author shows that the mathematical structures in [loc. cit.] are the same as those of flat connections and tube algebras in subfactor theory. Moreover, the author gives mathematical definitions of certain concepts in condensed matter theory in [loc. cit.] using the language of subfactor theory. Hence the whole theory is comprehensible to both physicists and mathematicians. Using known methods in subfactor theory, the author solves several problems proposed in [loc. cit.], by identifing physics concepts and statements in condensed matter physics with mathematical structures in subfactor theory. In particular, Ocneanu's tube algebra for a subfactor and the anyon algebra for tensors are isomorphic. The tensor categories arising from these two algebras are equivalent. Moreover, given a matrix product operator algebra arising from tensors in [loc. cit.], there exists a subfactor giving rise to connections that produce a tube algebra isomorphic to the original matrix product operator algebra.
