In an earlier paper, \textit{J. S. Przemieniecki} [AIAA J. 11, 33-39 (1973; Zbl 0252.73030)] introduced a formulation for free vibration analysis of bar and beam elements based on a power series of frequencies. In the present paper, the authors generalize that formulation for the analysis of dynamic response of elastic systems submitted to arbitrary nodal loads and initial displacements. Based on the mode superposition method, a set of coupled higher-order differential equations of motion is transformed into a set of uncoupied second-order differential equations of motion, which can be then integrated by means of a standard procedure based on the hybrid boundary element method developed by the authors for time-dependent and frequency-dependent problems. The authors demonstrate that the use of higher-order frequency terms improves numerical accuracy, and that the introduced modal assessment of dynamic problems is applicable to any kind of finite elements for which a generalized stiffness matrix is available. Some examples illustrate this theory.
