The author studies the Cauchy problem for a generalized Zakharov system \[ i\partial _tE=\alpha \text{rot rot} E-\text{grad div} E+nE-i(E\wedge B), \] \[ \partial _t^2n=\triangle n+\triangle |E|^2, \quad \triangle B=i\eta \text{rot rot} (E\wedge \overline E) + \beta B \] with initial data \(E(0,x)=E_0(x)\), \(n(0,x)=n_0(x)\), \(n_t(0,x)=n_1(x)\), \(x\in\mathbb{R}^d\) \((d=2,3)\), \(t\in [0,\infty)\), \(E\) is a vector function with values in \(\mathbb{C}^d\), \(n\) is a real valued function, \(B\) is a vector function with values in \(\mathbb{R}^d\), \(\beta \) is a nonpositive constant, and \(\alpha \geq 1\). This system describes the spontaneous generation of a magnetic field in cold plasma. The derivation of the system is similar to that for obtaining the Zakharov equations of strong Langmuir turbulence. Using the method of Bourgain the author proves well-posedness of the generalized Zakharov system in the framework of classical Sobolev spaces. Using the conservation laws, it turns out that the solutions can be extended globally in the energy space.
