An analytic solution is provided for coupled large deflections of plates and shallow shells made of functionally graded materials under transverse mechanical loads in a temperature field. The material properties of functionally graded shells are assumed to vary continuously through the shell thickness, according to a power law distribution of volume fraction of constituents. The fundamental equations for thin rectangular shallow shells are obtained using von Kármán theory, and the solution is obtained in terms of Fourier series. The authors discuss the effects of material properties, shell geometry and thermomechanical loading on the stress field.
