    The classical Schur test provides a criterion for boundedness of a positive operator \(A:L^p(X)\to L^p(Y)\), \(A>0\), \(1<p<\infty\), where \(X\) and \(Y\) are measure spaces with \(\sigma\)-finite measures. It is assumed that \(A\) is an integral operator with the kernel \(K(x,y)\). A multilinear operator \(T\) is understood as an integral operator \[ T(f_1,\ldots,f_n)(x)=\int_{X_1}\ldots\int_{X_n}K(x,x_1,\ldots,x_n) f_1(x_1)\ldots f(x_n) d\mu_1(x_1)\ldots d\mu_n(x_n) \] for a set of measurable sets \(X,X_1,\ldots,X_n\) with non-negative measures \(\mu,\mu_1,\ldots,\mu_n\), respectively and a non-negative kernel \(K(x,x_1,\ldots,x_n)\geq 0\). Theorem 1. Let \(A>0\). The following are equivalent: (a) \(T\) maps \(L^{p_1}(X_1)\times\ldots\times L^{p_n}(X_n)\) to \(L^r(X)\) with norm less than or equal to \(A\). Here \[ \frac 1{p_1}+\ldots\frac 1{p_n}=\frac 1r ,\qquad q=\frac q{q-1} . \] (b) For all \(B>A\) there exist measurable functions \(h_j\) on \(X_j\) with \(0<h_1,\ldots,h_n<\infty\) a.e., such that \[ T^{*j}(h_1,\ldots,h_{j-1})T(h_1,\ldots,h_n)^{r-1},h_{j+1},\ldots,h_n) \leq B^rh_j^{p_j-1}\qquad \text{a.e.}, \] where \(T^{*j}\) is the transpose of the linear operator \(g\mapsto T(f_1,\ldots,f_{j-1}),g,f_{j+1},\ldots,f_n)\). (c) For all \(B>A\) there exist measurable functions \(u_j\) on \(X_j\) and \(w_j\) on \(X\) with \(0<u_1,\ldots,u_n\), \(w<\infty\) a.e., such that \[ \begin{aligned} &T(u^{p_1}_1,u^{p_2}_2,\ldots,u^{p_n}_n) \leq Bw^{r} \qquad{\text{a.e.,}}\\ &T^{*1}(w^{r}_1,u^{p_2}_2,\ldots,u^{p_n}_n) \leq Bu_1^{p_1} \qquad{\text{a.e.,}}\\ &\vdots\\ &T^{*n}(u^{p_1}_1,u^{p_2}_2,\ldots,w^r)\leq Bu_n^{p_n} \qquad{\text{a.e..}}\end{aligned} \] The authors modify the theorem for the off-diagonal case \(1/r>1/p_1+\ldots+1/p_n\) and apply the obtained results to wawelet discretization of bilinear operators, to bilinear multipliers (bilinear convolutions) with symbols having the estimates \(|\partial_\xi^\beta\partial_\xi^\delta \sigma(\xi,\eta)|\leq C_{\beta,\delta}(|\xi|+|\eta|)^{-(|\beta|+|\delta|)}\) in Besov spaces.
