The authors present two ways for an estimation of the parameters of symmetric successive overrelaxation (SSOR) and alternating directions implicit (ADI) methods. The Riesz convexity theorem and its practical use for evaluation of the parameter arising in SSOR preconditiong is presented. Application to the discretized heat conduction equation is given. The utilization of the tridiagonal Fourier analysis for the estimation of the parameters required for SSOR is studied. The application to the three-dimensional Dirichlet boundary value problem is presented.
