Let \(X\) be a locally compact Hausdorff space and let \(C_{0}( X)\) be the space of all continuous real-valued functions which vanish at infinity. One says that a function \(h:I\subset\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) operates on a subspace \(B\) of \(C_{0}( X) \) if \(h\circ b\) is in \(B\) whenever \(b\) is in \(B\) for any \(b\in B\) with \(b( X) \subset I\). The main result of the present paper asserts that if there exists a continuous function \(h\) defined in a neighborhood of \(0\), non-affine in every neighborhood of \(0\), and satisfying \(|h( t) |\leq k|t|\), which operates on the subspace \(B\) of \(C_{0}( X) \), then every function in \(C_{0}( X) \) which can be approximated on every pair of points in \(X\) by functions in \(B\) can be approximated uniformly by functions in \(B\). The author obtains extensions to this framework of the theorems of Stone-Weierstrass and Machado as well as some new results.
