The authors introduce and study a basic interacting-particle model that takes into account different social factors, provides the flexibility to model the environment (such as city amenities, educational systems, public transportation and highways) and it is amenable to mathematical analysis. Three basic mechanisms which can lead to segregation are used in this model, namely social preference, economic disparity (the mobility of people) and a heterogeneous environment. The authors derive various macroscopic models for the population density and then they present some numerical experiments.
