The paper gives some new proofs of several known results about perturbations of matrix pencils. A direct and constructive proof of a theorem by \textit{A. Pokrzywa} [Linear Algebra Appl. 82, 99--121 (1986; Zbl 0601.15008)] is given, in which the closure of the orbit of each Kronecker canonical matrix pencil is described in terms of inequalities for invariants of matrix pencils. Using representation theory, \textit{K. Bongartz} [Comment. Math. Helv. 69, No. 4, 575--611 (1994; Zbl 0832.16008); Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 28, No. 5, 647--668 (1995; Zbl 0844.16007); Adv. Math. 121, No. 2, 245--287 (1996; Zbl 0862.16007)] gave a more abstract description of the same setting. In this paper, the authors formulate and prove the theorem by Pokrzywa [loc. cit.] in terms of successive replacements of direct summands in a Kronecker canonical pencil.
