The authors determine all permutation polynomials (PPs) of degree 6 over a finite field of characteristic two. This result completes the table of PPs of degree \(\leq 6\) given by \textit{L. E. Dickson} in 1897 [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. (2) 3, 381--389 (1897; JFM 28.0185.01). In addition the authors determine all PPs of degree 7 over a finite field of characteristic two. Good use is being made of the result of Lenstra, formerly the Carlitz-Wan conjecture, that over a finite field of characteristic \(q\), there is no PP of degree \(n\) if \(q>n^4\) and \(\gcd(n,q-1)>1\).
