A Reedy category is a category, \(\mathbb{R}\), equipped with a structure which makes it possible to prove that for any Quillen model category, \(\mathcal{E}\), the category of \(\mathbb{R}\)-indexed diagrams, \(\mathcal{E}^\mathbb{R}\), inherits a model structure in which the cofibrations, weak equivalences and fibrations can all be described explicitly in terms of those of \(\mathcal{E}\). There are important examples in which, although \(\mathbb{R}\) is not a Reedy category for fairly trivial but important reasons, \(\mathcal{E}^\mathbb{R}\) does have a Reedy-like structure. In this paper, the authors introduce a notion of generalised Reedy category and prove that, for any such category \(\mathbb{R}\) and any \(\mathbb{R}\)-projective model structure on \(\mathcal{E}\), \(\mathcal{E}^\mathbb{R}\) has again a neat model category structure. The extension to generalised Reedy categories includes many important examples occurring in topology such as for the Segal category \(\Gamma\) or the total category of a crossed simplicial group such as Connes' cyclic category, \(\Lambda\).
