This is a broad survey of the theory and applications of functional observers, suitable for graduate studies or specialized research stages. The exposition style is attractive and requires a medium level of training in control systems engineering. The presentation of each main theoretical topic relies on a rigorous mathematical foundation and it is accompanied by design algorithm(s) and illustrative example(s). The examples can be reproduced by the reader and assist her/him quickly to assimilate the theory. The material is organized in eight chapters, as follows: 1. Introduction, 2. State observers for different types of systems, 3. Linear functional observers, 4. A parametric approach to the design of reduced-order linear functional observers, 5. Functional unknown input observers: further results and applications, 6. Functional state and unknown input observers for nonlinear systems, 7. Simultaneous state and input estimation, 8. Further notes on functional observers.
