Let \(X\) be a Banach ideal space of measurable functions on \(I=[0,\infty)\) or \(I=[0,1]\). The associated abstract Cesàro space \(CX\) is defined as the space of all measurable functions \(f\) on \(I\) such that \(C|f|\in X\), where \(C\) denotes the Cesàro operator \[ (Cf)(x):=\frac{1}{x}\int_0^xf(t)\,\text{d}t \;\;\;\text{for} \;x\in I. \] The norm in \(CX\) is given by \(\|f\|_{CX}:=\|C|f|\|_X\). For \(X=L^p\) one obtains the usual \(p\)-Cesàro spaces \(\text{Ces}_p(I)\). In this paper, the authors study abstract Cesàro spaces from the point of view of optimal ranges and optimal domains for the Cesàro operator \(C\). The results show an essential difference between the cases \(I=[0,1]\) and \(I=[0,\infty)\). The authors also establish a variant of the Hardy inequality for Banach ideal spaces on \([0,1]\), which is used in the proofs.
