Let H be an even infinitely large natural number, let X be a partition of width 1/H of the interval [-H/2,H/2) and let L be the lattice \((1/H)^*{\mathbb{Z}}\subseteq^*{\mathbb{R}}\). Denote by R(X) the set of all H- periodic internal mappings of L into \({}^*{\mathcal C}\). If \(\Omega\subset {\mathbb{R}}\) is an open subset in \({\mathbb{R}}\), the reals, then \({\mathcal D}(\Omega)\) denotes the space of test functions with compact support in \(\Omega\). The algebraic dual of \({\mathcal D}(\Omega)\) is denoted by \({\mathcal D}^*(\Omega)\). If we denote by \(A(\Omega):=\{\phi \in R(X):\) \((\sum \phi (x)^*f(x):\) \(x\in X)/H\) is finite for all \(f\in {\mathcal D}(\Omega)\}\), then for all \(\phi\in A(\Omega)\), \(P_{\phi}(f):=st((\sum \phi (x)f^*(x))/H)\in {\mathcal D}^*(\Omega).\) It is shown that the mapping P: \(\phi\mapsto P_{\phi}\) of A(\(\Omega\)) into \({\mathcal D}^*(\Omega)\) is onto. By means of this process it is then possible to give a representation of the \(\Omega\)-distributions in terms of elements of A(\(\Omega\)). It should be observed that such a characterization is far from trivial. The author proceeds by first defining the space \(D_ F(\Omega)\), whose image under P is precisely the distributions of finite order. For the characterization of \(D_ F(\Omega)\) we have to refer to the paper. Then \({\mathcal D}(\Omega)\), whose P-image is the space \({\mathcal D}'(\Omega)\) of the distributions in the sense of Schwartz, can be characterized as the family of all \(\phi\in R(X)\) such that, for every compact subset \(K\subset \Omega\), there exists an element \(\psi \in D_ F(\Omega)\) which satisfies \(\phi =\psi\) on \({}^*K\cap X\).
