\textit{D. S. Passman} had classified [J. Algebra 15, 352-370 (1970; Zbl 0198.04404)] the finite \(p\)-groups in which the non-normal subgroups have order (at most) \(p\). \textit{Q. Zhang, X. Sun, L. An} and \textit{M. Xu} had classified [Algebra Colloq. 15, No. 1, 167-180 (2008; Zbl 1153.20018)] the finite \(p\)-groups in which the non-normal subgroups have order at most \(p^2\). In the paper under review, a classification is obtained of the finite \(p\)-groups, \(p\) odd, in which the non-normal subgroups have order at most \(p^3\). The case \(p=2\) had been dealt with by \textit{Q. Zhang} and \textit{M. Su} [Front. Math. China 7, No. 5, 971-1003 (2012; Zbl 1266.20028)]. This solves Problem~2279 from the book of \textit{Y. Berkovich} and \textit{Z. Janko} [Groups of prime power order. Vol. 3. de Gruyter Expositions in Mathematics 56. Berlin: Walter de Gruyter (2011; Zbl 1229.20001)].
