The class of so-called \textit{cogauges} is introduced. These functions generalize the Minkowski gauges and other min-type functions, like the scalarization function due to \textit{C. Gerth} and \textit{P. Weidner} [J. Optim. Theory Appl. 67, No. 2, 297--320 (1990; Zbl 0692.90063)], that was intensively used in vector optimization. Some properties (e.g. continuity and superlinearity) of the cogauges are investigated. A nice connection with the abstract convex sets is also underlined. The cogauges are then employed for delivering nonlinear separation statements, that can be applied for instance to data classification problems.
