This paper is concerned with representations over \(\overline{{\mathbb F}}_p\) of the group \(G = \text{GL}(n,F)\), where \(F\) is a non-archimedean local field with residual characteristic \(p\). Let \(I\) be the standard Iwahori subgroup of \(G\) and \(I(1)\) the Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(I\). To any smooth representation \(V\) of \(G\) over \(\overline{{\mathbb F}}_p\) is attached a module over the Hecke algebra \({\mathcal H}_{\overline{{\mathbb F}}_p}(G,I(1))\), namely the set \(V^{I(1)}\) of \(I(1)\)-invariants in \(V\) (\(V^{I(1)}\neq 0\), when \(V\neq 0\)). The properties of the functor \(V\mapsto V^{I(1)}\) are explored by means of ''standard modules'' over the Hecke algebra, cf. \textit{R. Ollivier} [J. Algebra 304, No. 1, 1--38 (2006; Zbl 1107.22010)]. According to the nature of their central character the standard modules are divided into three classes: regular, singular and supersingular. In this paper a criterion for the irreducibility of principal series representations of \(G\) is proved by a study of intertwining operators between regular standard modules. For \(n = 3\) it is proved that the space of \(I(1)\)-invariants of a principal series representation is a regular standard module.
