The authors look at the first order differential equation \[ -iBy^{\prime }+Qy=\lambda y, \] where \(y\) is the vector \(y=( y_{1},\dots ,y_{n})^{T},\;y_{i}\in L^{2}( 0,1)\), \(B=B^{\ast}= \text{diag}( b_{1},\;b_{2},\dots ,b_{n})\) and \(Q\) \(=( q_{ij}) _{1\leq i,j\leq n}\) where \(q_{ij}\in L^{\infty }( 0, 1).\) The boundary conditions depend on the eigenvalue parameter \[ P_{0}(\lambda )y(0)+P_{1}(\lambda )y(1)=0, \] where \(P_{i}\) is a matrix polynomial such that \(\det ( P_{0}P_{0}^{\ast }+P_{1}P_{1}^{\ast }) >0\) for \(\lambda \in \mathbb{C}.\) Under the above conditions the authors show that the eigenfunctions form a complete system in \(\bigoplus_{1}^{n}L^{2}( 0, 1).\) Furthermore, if we remove certain ``extra'' associated eigenfunctions, then the remaining set is a Riesz basis.
