The authors show that a certain family of irreducible, unitary representations of the general linear group \(G\) over a \(p\)-adic field are distinguished by the symplectic group in \(G\). This work is a step towards proving the conjectures of [\textit{M. J. Heumos}, Models and periods for automorphic forms on \(\text{GL}_n\). Representation theory of groups and algebras. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society. Contemp. Math. 145, 135--144 (1993; Zbl 0797.22009)]. Combined with the upcoming work of the authors, ``Global mixed periods and local Klyachko models for the general linear group'', they show, in particular, that this family exhausts the irreducible, unitary, \(H\)-distinguished representations of \(G\).
