A complex valued function in a complex variable \(s\) relating the standard intertwining operator of induced representations \(I(\chi)\) of the topological two-fold cover of \(\mathrm{SL}(2,F)\), \(F\) a local field, to the Whittaker functional with respect to a nontrivial additive character, is computed and expressed as a product of quotients of \(L\)-functions in \(s\) and the character \(\chi\), when the local field \(F\) is both archimedean, namely it is \(\mathbb R\), and non-archimedean, including the case where the residual characteristic is 2. The entire paper consists of computations. In the context of the delicacy of the case of residual characteristic 2, perhaps it is of interest to mention here that multiplicity one theorem for the discrete automorphic spectrum of the unitary group \(U(3)\) in three variable for a quadratic extension \(E/F\) of global fields is not yet proven since the case \(p=2\) is not yet done. This is discussed in [J. Anal. Math. 94, 1--15 (2004; Zbl 1088.22010)], where it is explained why the attempt at a global proof was wrong.
