Let \(S=(P,B,I)\) be a finite generalized quadrangle (GQ) of order \((s,t)\). Given two points \(x,y\in S\), we write \(x\sim y\) provided there is some line \(L\) for which \(xILIy\). For \(x\in P\) put \(x^{\perp}=\{y\in P\mid y\sim x\}\) and for \(A\subset P\) put \(A^{\perp}=\cap\;(x^{\perp}\mid x\in A)\). Let \({\mathcal H}(x,y)\) be the group of all collineations of \(S\) fixing \(x\) and \(y\) linewise. The GQ \(S\) is said to be \((x,y)\)-transitive, \(x\nsim y\), if \({\mathcal H}(x,y)\) is transitive on each set \(^{\sim}\setminus \{x,z\}\) and \(^{\sim}\setminus \{y,z\}\), \(z\in \{x,y\}^{\perp}\) where \(^{\sim}\) denotes the set of all points incident with the line \(xz\). The author proves the following theorem: Let \(S\) be a GQ of order \((s,t)\), \(s>1\) and \(t>1\), which is \((x,y)\)-transitive for all \(x,y\in P\) with \(x\nsim y\). Then \(S\) is isomorphic to one of \(W(s)\), \(Q(4,s)\), \(Q(5,s)\), \(H(3,s)\), or \(H(4,s)\), i.e. \(S\) is of classical type.
