    The paper investigates the class \({\mathcal F}_{an}\) of all finite groups G such that \(U\leq G\) implies that U is \({\mathcal F}\)-subnormal in G or U is \({\mathcal F}\)-subabnormal in G, where \({\mathcal F}\) is a saturated formation closed under the operation of taking subgroups. The problem of finding a description of the groups in \({\mathcal F}_{an}\) was solved by \textit{S. Bauman} and \textit{G. Ebert} [J. Algebra 36, 287-293 (1975; Zbl 0314.20019)] for some specific classes \({\mathcal F}\), namely \({\mathcal F}={\mathcal N}\) or \({\mathcal F}={\mathcal S}_{p'}{\mathcal S}_ p\), the class of all soluble p-nilpotent groups, where p is an odd prime. Groups in \({\mathcal F}_{an}\setminus {\mathcal F}\) are of special interest in view of the author's recent generalizations of the theory of \({\mathcal F}\)-projectors and \({\mathcal F}\)-covering subgroups [Math. Z. 186, 149-178 (1984; Zbl 0544.20015); Publ., Secc. Mat., Univ. Autòn. Barc. 29, No.2/3, 39-76 (1985; Zbl 0588.20015); Arch. Math. 44, 193-209 (1985; Zbl 0564.20012)].
