    Using polyhedral cones associated to M-matrices, the authors develop sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of the origin of linear time-invariant discrete-time systems (*) \(x_{k+1}=A x_ k\), \(k\geq 0\). In particular, if the polyhedral cone \(S_+(| A| -I)=\{x\in R^ n;\quad (| A| -I)x\leq 0\}\) resp. \(S_+((| A| -I)^ T)\) is solid, then the origin of (*) is asymptotically stable. For time- varying systems (replace A by \(A_ k\) in (*)) the same result holds true, if for all \(k\geq 0\) the matrix \(-(| A_ k| -I)\) is an M- matrix and if \(\cap_{k\geq 0}S_+(| A_ k| -I)\) resp. \(\cap_{k\geq 0}S_+((| A_ k| -I)^ T\) is a solid cone.
