Let \(q=(q_ n)\) be a sequence of integers \(q_ n\geq 2\), let \(\tilde q_ n=q_ 1\cdot...\cdot q_ n\), let \(\Sigma_ q\) denote the q-adic solenoid, and let \({\mathcal C}({\mathbb{R}})\) denote the space of bounded continuous functions \({\mathbb{R}}\to {\mathbb{R}}\). It is shown that \(\Sigma_ q\) can be defined as the maximal-ideal space (with a suitable group structure) of the subalgebra A of \({\mathcal C}({\mathbb{R}})\) defined as the uniform closure of the union \(\cup A_ n\) where \(A_ n\) is the set of \(\tilde q_ n\)-periodic functions; consequently, in the representation \(\xi =t+\sum c_ n\tilde q_ n\) of elements of \(\Sigma_ q\) the convergence should be meant in the weak* topology of \(\Sigma_ q\) i.e., in a suitable compactification of \({\mathbb{R}}\). Here \(c_ n\in \{0,...,q_{n+1}-1\}\) and \(x_ 0<t\leq x_ 0+1\), where \(x_ 0\) is given a priori; the last condition may be replaced by \(x_ 0\leq t<x_ 0+1\). In this way we get various representations of \(\Sigma_ q\), in particular that used by \textit{E. Hewitt} and \textit{G. Ritter}, Math. Ann. 257, 61-83 (1981; Zbl 0448.42005)].
