Let \(C^ 2\) be the complex plane endowed with the complex structure J and let \(\Omega\) be the standard symplectic structure. The Riemannian surface \(M\subseteq C^ 2\) is a Lagrangean surface if \(\Omega (x,y)=0\) for every tangent vector to M. Taking \textit{M. L. Gromov}'s result into account [Actes Congr. internat. Math. 1970, 221-225 (1971; Zbl 0237.57019)] the topological properties of the Lagrangean surfaces in \(C^ 2\) are perfectly determined by the fact that TM\(\otimes C\) is trivial. Concerning the Riemannian properties of these surfaces it is well-known that the Gaussian curvature G is equal with the normal curvature \(G^ D.\) This paper deals with the converse of the above property. The authors give the following important result: if M is an analytical surface in the Euclidean space \(E^ 4\) with the property that \(G=G^ D\) and \({\mathcal H}\), then there is a complex structure J on \(E^ 4\) so that M is Lagrangean with respect the symplectic form \(\Omega\) associated to J. Here \({\mathcal H}\) is a (0,3)-tensor obtained from the second fundamental form of the surface. In the proof of this theorem the authors use a result due to \textit{D. Hoffmann}, \textit{R. Osserman} and \textit{R. Schoen} [Comment. Math. Helv. 57, 519-531 (1982; Zbl 0512.53008)]. In the last two sections a lot of applications are given.
