The author studies potential theory in Dirichlet spaces with an emphasis on fine-topological aspects. The Dirichlet space W under consideration is a regular one constructed from a transient semigroup of kernels with symmetric density (with respect to a dense measure). The notions of weakly superharmonic functions, weakly harmonic functions and weak potentials are defined by means of the Dirichlet form of W. On the other hand, the fine topology is introduced via the set of excessive functions and then all the notions of fine potential theory (finely superharmonic functions, etc.) are defined. It is shown that, for a finely open set U, a function in W is weakly superharmonic (weakly harmonic, a weak potential resp.) in U if and only if it is finely superharmonic (finely harmonic, a fine potential, resp.) a.e. in U. In the final section, ``bounded point evaluations'' for weakly harmonic functions are discussed.
