Let M be a \(\sigma\)-finite von Neumann algebra and let \(\alpha\) be an action of the real line R on M. The maximality of the non-commutative Hardy space \(H^{\infty}(\alpha)\) with respect to the action \(\alpha\) among \(\sigma\)-weakly closed subalgebras of M has been discussed by several authors, for instance, the author [Can. J. Math., 37, 405-429 (1985; Zbl 0555.46031)] and \textit{P. S. Muhly} and \textit{K.-S. Saito} [ibid. 39, 74-99 (1987)] etc. The following author's result (Theorem 3.7) seems to provide the final version of the problem for an action of R; Suppose \(\alpha\) be a centrally ergodic action, then \(H^{\infty}(\alpha)\) is maximal if and only if either \(sp(\alpha)=\Gamma (\alpha)\) (Connes spectrum of \(\alpha)\) or there is a projection \(F\in M\) such that \(H^{\infty}(\alpha)=\{x\in M:(1- F)xF=0\}\). In the case where \(H^{\infty}(\alpha)\) is not maximal, the author also proves (Theorem 2.19) that any \(\sigma\)-weakly closed subalgebra of M containing \(H^{\infty}(\alpha)\) is of the form \(H^{\infty}(\gamma)\) for an action \(\gamma\) of R with precise description of the action \(\gamma\). The result was proved before with further assumptions, for instance; the case \(\alpha\) being inner [\textit{D. R. Larson} and the author; J. Oper. Theory 16, 157-164 (1986; Zbl 0635.47042)], the case where the fixed point algebra is a Cartan subalgebra of M [\textit{P. S. Muhly}, \textit{K.-S. Saito} and the author; Ann. Math., II. Ser. 127, 245-278 (1988; Zbl 0649.47036)].
