An element \(0<s\) of an \(\ell\)-group \(G\) is singular if \(0\leq x\leq s\) implies that \(x\wedge(s-x)=0\). An \(\ell\)-group \(G\) is a Specker group if it is generated as a group by its singular elements. The central theme of this paper is the approximation of \(\ell\)-groups by Specker groups and by so called \(S\)-discrete \(\ell\)-groups. There are a lot of results. One of them is: if \(G\) is a projectable \(\ell\)-group, then it has an \(\ell\)- subgroup \(H\) which is Specker and for which the map \(P\to P\cap H\) defines a boolean isomorphism between the algebra of polars of \(G\) and \(H\).
