This is a well-written survey on unitary representations of class 1 and generalized Gelfand pairs. The theory considers: a machinery of Hilbert subspaces of distributions on \(G/H\), \(G\) being a real Lie group, \(H\) a closed subgroup of \(G\), both unimodular (an injection of a unitary representation of \(G\) in the quasiregular representation on \(G/H\), its dual transformation, cyclic vectors, a cone of positive definite distributions (reproducing distributions), extremal distributions, a decomposition into extremal distributions (a Plancherel formula)), Gelfand pairs and generalized Gelfand pairs, a Thomas' criterion, semisimple symmetric spaces \(G/H\), joint eigendistributions for invariant differential operators and so on. A numerous quantity of particular cases and examples is included. Reviewer's note: In addition to this paper, Sections 8, 10 of my survey [Harmonic analysis on homogeneous spaces, in: Representation theory and noncommutative harmonic analysis. II. Encycl. Math. Sci. 59, 1-135 (1995); translation from Itogi Nauki Tekh., Ser. Sovrem. Probl. Math., Fundam. Napravl. 59, 1-144 (1995; Zbl 0818.43001)] could be recommended.
