The author considers a class of superlinear Sturm-Liouville problems \[ - u''(x)=f(u(x))-th(x), \qquad x\in (0,1), \quad u(0)=u(1)=0 \] where the smooth nonlinearity \(f\) is such that \[ \lim_{s\to -\infty} f'(s)-\alpha \qquad \text{and} \qquad \lim_{s\to \infty} f'(s)=\infty. \] The author assumes that \(h\) is smooth and positive on \((0,1)\). It is proved that the number of solutions increases without bounds as \(t\) tends to infinity. This result generalizes to the nonautonomous case. An analogous result of \textit{B. Ruf} and \textit{S. Solimini} in [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 17, 761-771 (1986; Zbl 0608.34019)] is proved for \(h(x)\equiv 1\).
