The paper is devoted to applications of general theory of dynamical systems to studying the qualitative behaviour of fluid flows. The authors consider a two-dimensional aperiodically time-dependent flow of fluid and investigate how the hyperbolic trajectories of the flow and their stable and unstable manifolds act as mediators of transport. A numerical method for computing stable and unstable manifolds is developed and applied to several problems. Lobe dynamics, Rossby waves, etc. are investigated. Some new transport phenomena are found through numerical simulation.
