    It is argued that the labeling of Hilbert's philosophy of mathematics as formalism is highly misleading. The author claims that Hilbert's so-called formalism was the result of several independent ideas most of which he could have maintained even if he had given up his formalism. Among those ideas were: axiomatic ideal and the idea of mathematical reasoning as combinatorial reasoning.
