This is an expository textbook at the beginning graduate level treating some of the mathematics used in solving certain inverse scattering problems in one dimension. It consists of ten chapters; in the first six chapters layered media and some layer-stripping methods are considered, and the remaining four chapters deal with simple inverse scattering problems in quantum mechanics. Several exercises are given at the end of some sections. As it is stated in its preface this is not a comprehensive book on inverse scattering problems, and the bibliography at the end of the book is by no means complete and contains only about 130 references. A more comprehensive treatment of inverse scattering problems in one dimension can be found in the book by \textit{K. Chadan} and \textit{P. C. Sabatier} [Inverse problems in quantum scattering theory (1989; Zbl 0681.35088)].
