The standard derivation of field theory Hamiltonian formalism from a variational principle involves an integration by parts and depends on the requirement that the resulting boundary terms have to vanish. If the boundary terms do not vanish, the equations of motion have to be modified. The author suggests that this could be done by introducing a modified Poisson bracket. A technical problem is in the fact that it is still an open question in which cases this modified Poisson bracket satisfies the Jacobi identity.
