The authors present an analytical solution for the inelastic response of an arbitrarily layered concentric cylindrical assemblage under axial shear loading of the type that produces homogeneous deformation in an equivalent homogenized medium. This solution may form the basis for the model of the axial shear response of unidirectional metal matrix composites based on the multiple concentric cylinder geometry. By using the Fourier series expansion of the displacement, first, thee authors develop an analytical solution for each layer in the assemblage. These solutions are reformulated in terms of interfacial displacement harmonics which are taken as fundamental unknowns by constructing the local stiffness matrix for each layer. The resulting system of equations, in which the integrals of inelastic strain appears as force-like terms, is then solved by using Mendelson's iterative method developed for elastoplastic boundary value problems. Results presented illustrate the convergence of the solution, the effects of fiber anisotropy on the inelastic axial shear response of unidirectional graphite composites, and allow to perform the comparison with the predictions of Aboudi's well-established generalized method of cells.
