This is the English translation of the German book `Theorie der endlichen Gruppen. Eine Einführung' [Springer-Lehrbuch, Springer, Berlin (1998; Zbl 0902.20006)]. There are just minor changes, of course the wrong lemma 1.6.5 of the original version has been removed.
