The main goal of the present paper is to provide a function theoretic characterization of the inducing maps \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) for which the operators \(C_\phi C^*_\psi\) and \(C^*_\psi C_\phi\) are compact on the standard weighted Bergman spaces. The authors completely characterize the compactness of \(C_\phi C^*_\psi\) in terms of both the angular derivative and general counting functions of the inducing maps. For example, if \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) are analytic self-maps on the open unit disk \(D\), they show that \(C_\phi C^*_\psi\) is compact if and only if there do not exist points \(\xi_1\) and \(\xi_2\) on the unit circle such that \(\phi\) has a finite angular derivative at \(\xi_2\), and \(\phi(\xi_1)= \psi(\xi_2)\). Also, if \(\phi\) and \(\psi\) are univalent self-maps of \(D\), then \(C^*_\psi C_\phi\) is compact if and only if for each \(\xi\) on the unit circle, either \(\phi\) or \(\psi\) cannot have finite angular derivative at \(\xi\).
