Continuing her previous papers [ibid. 124, No. 3, 371--384 (2001; Zbl 0994.03019); Soft Comput. 7, No. 2, 73--78 (2002; Zbl 1019.03502)], the author introduces disjunctive and conjunctive normal forms as special formulas of BL-algebras of functions defined on an assigned set and taking values from a support BL-algebra \(L\). She proves that infinite normal forms are universal representation formulas and finite normal forms are universal approximation formulas for extensional functions. In the case that \(L\) is the BL-algebra on the unit real interval induced by a continuous Archimedean triangular norm, an estimation of the quality of approximation of the original function by functions represented by suitable discrete normal forms is given. Moreover, if \(L\) is an MV-algebra, then an exact representation of functions in one variable with the respective discrete conjuctive normal forms is also supplied.
