B. Y. Chen introduced for a Riemannian manifold \(M\) an invariant \(\delta_M\) and proved for an \(n\)-dimensional submanifold \(M\) in a real space form of constant sectional curvature \(c\) an inequality \[ \delta_M\leq {n^2(n- 2)\over 2(n- 1)}| H|^2+ {(n+1)(n- 2)\over 2} c, \] involving the squared mean curvature vector \(H\) of the immersion [see \textit{B.-Y. Chen}, Handbook of differential geometry, Vol. I, 187--418 (2000; Zbl 0968.53002)]. Recently, the first author established in [Kyungpook Math. J. 39, No. 2, 465--476 (1999; Zbl 1010.53014)] a contact version of Chen's inequality for a submanifold tangent to the structure vector field of a Sasakian space form. In the present paper a similar version is established for the case when in the role of this space form is an \(S\)-space-form \(\widetilde M(c)\) [see \textit{D. E. Blair}, J. Differ. Geom. 4, 155--167 (1970; Zbl 0202.20903)]. Also the case of equality is characterized. Some applications to the case of \(\theta\)-slant immersions are obtained. For a \(\theta\)-slant submanifold \(M\) of minimum dimension in an \(S\)-space-form \(\widetilde M(c)\) it is established that the equality holds if and only if \(M\) is minimal.
