Within the context of the static approach to limit analysis, the authors propose the use of the \(p\)-version of finite element method as a robust and accurate approach for calculating collapse load multipliers. In particular, the authors find that, as expected with such high-order elements, locking caused by volumetric incompressibility does not occur in plane strain problems. They expect that this would also be the case for three-dimensional problems. Furthermore, the \(p\)-approach is not only accurate for limit analysis problems but would also be suitable for solving shakedown problems. Generic, advantageous features of \(p\)-approach such as a small number of elements, hierarchical shape functions and blending mapping functions are shown for limit analysis problems.
