A new a posteriori error estimator for a boundary element solution related to a Dirichlet problem with a second order elliptic partial differential operator is proposed. This estimator can be applied for an arbitrary given boundary element approximation, for example, Galerkin, collocation or qualocation scheme. The main method is based on the solution of an appropriate error equation, which is a boundary integral equation of the second kind involving the adjoint double layer potential. The Neumann series for the solution process are applied. Some numerical scheme is described as practical implementation, and corresponding error estimates are proved. The numerical results for the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the two-dimensional Laplace equation in an \(L\)-shaped domain are demonstrated as example.
