This paper is devoted to the application of the multipole method, which combines analytical and numerical approaches to solve the Dirichlet problem in a planar semi-infinite domain of complex shape. This problem is formulated to model an electric field in gas lasers of special design. It is shown that the method guarantees efficient and highly accurate calculation of the strength of a strongly nonuniform electric field inside the computational domain up to the segments of the domain boundary with a rapidly varying boundary curvature. A model problem of optimization of the shape of electrodes is solved. Numerical results are presented.
