Mathematical aspects of ocean dynamics are considered from the view point of degrees of freedom relevant to the nonlinear fluid equations in the quasi-geostrophic formulation. The fluid is assumed incompressible, and with neglected thermodynamic characteristics. The domain is divided into a finite number of horizontal layers with boundary conditions imposed on its top (coupling to the atmosphere) and bottom (drag effects). Through formulated and proven theorems, the solutions have been shown to be unique and with a finite degree of freedom.
