In this second edition [for a presentation of the contents of the first edition see (1996; Zbl 0843.73001)] one reports the death of the second author, and one corrects some small errors. The book is mainly a clear and concise introductory text to classical functional analysis, presenting the fundamentals. Two chapters (three and eight) open the perspective towards applications in mechanics and inverse problems.
