Let $n\geq 2$. A Besicovitch set is defined as a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ which contains a unit line segment in every direction. There sets can have measure zero. The Kakeya set conjecture asserts that all Besicovitch sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ have dimension $n$. The arithmetic Kakeya conjecture, formulated by \textit{N. H. Katz} and \textit{T. Tao} [J. Anal. Math. 87, 231--263 (2002; Zbl 1027.42014)], is a statement about addition of finite sets. The main aims of the paper is to give a number a number of equivalent forms of the conjecture.
